100% local and organic: closing the protein gap for poultry in the ICOPP Project Organic Eprints
Nelder, Rebecca; Smith, Jo; Clements, Ruth; Pearce, Bruce.
A key challenge in improving the sustainability of organic poultry production is meeting the required levels of nutrients from locally sourced organic feeds. 100% organic diets for monogastrics will become compulsory in the EU from 1st January 2015. The ICOPP project brings together knowledge, from 10 EU countries, of local feeds for monogastrics and their wider impact on growth, health and welfare and the environment to identify feeding strategies which comply with organic principles. This poster will report on feeding trials carried out with broilers in the UK by FAI and ORC to investigate the impact of algae, peas and lupins on broiler performance and welfare.

100% Organic Feed for Pigs – Results of Feed Trials in the UK Organic Eprints
Smith, Jo; Gerrard, Catherine L.; Nelder, Rebecca; Clements, Ruth; Pearce, Bruce; Zaralis, Konstantinos.
Current regulations for organic pig and poultry production systems permit feed ingredients of non-organic origin, primarily due to concerns that a 100 % organic diet would be unable to meet the demand for the essential amino acids lysine and methionine. 100 % organic diets for monogastrics will become compulsory in the EU from 1st January 2015, and so there is an urgent need to develop economically profitable feeding strategies based on organic feed across Europe. Feeding trials carried out with Gloucester old spot pigs in the UK found that there was no significant difference in the weight gains across the diets until the last week of the trial when there a significant difference in weight increase for the male pigs on the bean diet. This suggests that a...

100% Organic Feed for Poultry – Results of Feed Trials in the UK Organic Eprints
Gerrard, Catherine L.; Smith, Jo; Nelder, Rebecca; Clements, Ruth; Pearce, Bruce; Bright, Ashleigh.
Current regulations for organic monogastric production systems permit feed ingredients of non-organic origin, primarily due to concerns about meeting the demand for the essential amino acids methionine and lysine. However, 100 % organic diets will become compulsory in the EU from 1st January 2015, so there is a need to develop feeds which will supply the required level of nutrients and support high animal health and welfare. This paper reports on feeding trials carried out with broilers in the UK to investigate the impact of three 100 % organic diets: a control diet with globally sourced ingredients, a diet based on locally sourced (i.e. within Europe) organic ingredients, and a diet based on locally sourced organic ingredients and algae. The results of...

Agroforestry Policy Review Organic Eprints
Smith, Jo.
A lack of policy support is seen as one of the main barriers to wider adoption of agroforestry, with the integration of trees at a low density into agricultural land challenging the conventional specialisation of forestry and agricultural policy mechanisms. Within the EU, it is necessary to examine how agroforestry fits into the two pillars of agricultural support; Pillar I - direct aids and market support, and Pillar II - rural development, as well as within forestry policy schemes for farm woodlands.

Developing modern multifunctional agroforestry systems for sustainable intensification Organic Eprints
Smith, Jo; Pearce, Bruce; Döring, Thomas F.; Wolfe, M S.
Agroforestry is a land-use system that integrates trees and shrubs with crops and/or livestock production. It has been identified by the International Assessment of Agricultural Knowledge, Science and Technology for Development (IAASTD, 2008) as a ‘win-win’ approach that balances the production of commodities (food, feed, fuel, fibre, etc.) with non-commodity outputs such as environmental protection and cultural and landscape amenities. This paper will review the potential of agroforestry as part of a multifunctional working landscape in temperate regions, and will consider management and policy implications of widespread adoption of this form of land-use.

ICOPP Report: Can the range contribute to the nutritional needs of organic pigs and poultry? Organic Eprints
Smith, Jo; Bauer, Christine.
On-farm habitats, including woodlands, agroforestry, headlands, field margins and agri-environment scheme options such as game bird cover strips, support a wide diversity of floral and faunal resources that may provide opportunities to enhance feed provision from the range for monogastrics. There have been many biodiversity studies of these habitats and this desk study will collate these data and information to test the hypothesis that the range can contribute to the nutritional needs of pigs and poultry as part of the CORE Organic II project ICOPP.

Integrating willow-based bioenergy and organic dairy production – the role of tree fodder for feed supplementation Organic Eprints
Smith, Jo; Leach, Katharine; Rinne, Marketta; Kuoppala, Kaisa.
Silvopastoral systems that combine livestock and trees offer two main advantages for the animals. First, trees modify microclimatic conditions which can have beneficial effects on pasture growth and animal welfare. Second, trees also provide alternative feed resources during periods of low forage availability. This paper reports on research carried out within the Sustainable Organic and Low Input Dairying (SOLID) project to investigate the multifunctional potential of a novel integrated willow-based bio-energy/organic dairy production system in the UK, especially the role of tree fodder for feed supplementation in organic dairy systems. The nutritional value of two ages (1st and 2nd year re-growth) of short rotation coppiced willow was assessed in two...

Novel and underutilized feed resources – potential for use in organic and low input dairy production Organic Eprints
Rinne, Marketta; Dragomir, Catalin; Kuoppala, Kaisa; Marley, Christina; Smith, Jo; Yanez Ruiz, David.
This literature review evaluates the potential of a range of by-products from the agricultural, greenhouse, forestry, food processing and bioenergy sectors and agro-forestry systems as feed components in organic and low input dairy systems. The variability of the raw materials further modified by differing processing methods results in wide range of feed materials available. Innovative use of novel and underutilized feed resources has the potential to improve the efficiency of the “green economy”.

Novel feeds for organic dairy chains Organic Eprints
Rinne, Marketta; Dragomir, Catalin; Kuoppala, Kaisa; Smith, Jo; Yanez Ruiz, David.
The objective of the current work was to assess various novel and underutilized feeds and thus increase the awareness of various novel feeding solutions to support organic and low-input dairy production. A set of various feeds representing high protein feeds, by-products from distilling, wineries, fruit and vegetable production, whole crop cereals, agroforestry and wood derived materials were collected from Spain, Romania, UK and Finland and analysed for chemical composition and digestibility. The results can be used to aid in exploiting the potential of different feed resources and in ration formulation, and to demonstrate potential to widen the basis of feed supply on organic and low-input dairy farms. The use of various by-products as animal feeds...

The Role of Agroecology in Sustainable Intensification Organic Eprints
Lampkin, Nicolas; Pearce, Bruce; Leake, Alastair; Creissen, Henry; Gerrard, Catherine L; Gerling, Robbie; Lloyd, Sofie; Padel, Susanne; Smith, Jo; Smith, Laurence; Vieweger, Anja; Wolfe, Martin.
‘Sustainable intensification’ is now often used to describe the future direction for agriculture and food production as a way to address the challenges of increasing global population, food security, climate change and resource conservation. While sustainable intensification is interpreted by some to relate to increasing production, with more efficient but potentially increased use of inputs and technology, there is also a need to consider environmental protection, including the conservation and renewal of natural capital and the output of ecosystem services. There is a growing consensus that sustainable intensification should not only avoid further environmental damage, but actively encourage environmental benefits. This includes addressing issues of...

Wirkungen konservierender Bodenbearbeitung auf Regenwürmer unter Kleegras im ökologischen Landbau Organic Eprints
Haby, Jessica; Döring, Thomas F.; Crowley, Oliver; Lazzaro, Mariaterresa; Smith, Jo.
A key challenge in organic agriculture is the reduction of tillage intensity. While previous research has shown earthworms to benefit from reduced tillage (RT), little is known about after-effects of RT during the grass/clover ley phase in organic rotations. In a large-scale replicated on-farm trial in England we studied earthworm populations before and during the ley phase, comparing the Ecodyn cultivator (tilling depth: 7.5 cm) with a mouldboard plough (depth: 15 cm). Spring sampling of earthworms during the ley phase revealed no significant difference in earthworm densities between the two tillage treatments while two years earlier in the arable phase, earthworm densities had been significantly higher under RT. Also, differences in species composition...
